The Sunday Salon: My Week in Words

My reading wasn’t that consistent this week. I stole passages from The Whole World Over while eating breakfast standing over the counter, or putting on my shoes in the morning.  So, I’ll interrupt this regularly scheduled post for a taste of the reading I actually finished this week.

Is This A Phase? Child Development & Parent Strategies, Birth – 6 Years
This is such an interesting book for parents of small children.  I ordered it because I liked it after reading a review at GNMParents and checking it out from the library to investigate it further. It’s got a great common sense approach, and is filled with solid information, and enough charts and stats to act as a handy reference as well as a book you could read straight through. Matt and I particularly enjoyed its idea that children really don’t sleep that great until they’re almost four. We found it refreshing. I don’t usually read parenting books, but I enjoyed this one. No demeaning attitudes inside- yes!

2001 Saab Owner’s Manual
Yep, that’s right. I actually have read this several times. Straight through. This morning I had it out again when my car alarm gave our neighbors a wake-up call at random 3 minute intervals.  Unfortunately, it said I should take it to the dealer for this problem, so I turned to the Internet and found that the car alarm battery was running low. Since it was behind the wheel well and I didn’t have time to monkey with it, I took the fuse out and voila! Problem solved! Well, sort of. I now have no A/C. I’ll deal with that after the Michigan sub-zero season ends, though.  For the record, I still love my Saab!

Exodus 1-18
I belong to a Bible study group that meets each Sunday evening. It is terrific fun, and with this week’s discussion, I feel like we really got to the heart of the story of Moses. Everyone was really excited about the reading, and I think we all agreed that sometimes the best leaders are the reluctant ones.  Moses was open to the call, even if he fought it along the way.  In the end, he did great things.  Really exciting reading.

That’s it, kids!  Stay tuned for some reviews in the coming week. I hope to have finished The Whole World Over by Julia Glass, lost 2 more pounds, and if I’m lucky, got some sleep. Cheers!
