The Bug Shares His Faves

The Bug might own more books than me at this point. I don’t mind, and I’m not jealous. After all, I gave most of them to him. Little does he know that he’s even got a whole stash of books to read at every stage of his development- from classics to contemporary. I’m really looking forward to helping him discover reading. Right now, we read in the evening. First, we’ll each read our books separately. He has a basket full of them that he goes through each night and he stays involved with them for quite a long time on his own. Later, we read together. He always tends to choose his favorites for reading aloud, and it’s really turned into a tradition with us. Take a look at his list of favorites and let me know if your kids enjoy them too (alternatively, let me know which books your kids are into so I can buy them!).

Moo Baa La La La by Susan Boynton (we read this aloud in the car)
Miss Spider’s New Car by David Kirk (He loves the sound effects his “Bobby” makes with this one)
Violet’s House: Baby Einstein (awesome tactile book!) by Julie Aigner-Clark
Any Bright Baby Books (the best is 100 First Words by Roger Priddy)
Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? By Dr. Seuss

Are you seeing any trends here? Yep, sensory stuff! The Bug is all about seeing, touching, smelling, and hearing. In our house, the men subscribe to the theory “the louder the better”, and I am definitely in for it!

Oh Ian has a few favorites, yet he’s not at the stage where he’ll read on his own. Right now, he’s all about being read too. We’ve just started reading to him as part of his bedtime routine and Jesse’s going through a book of fairy tales.

As of March, here is a list of Ian’s favorites. He still loves the Usbourn Touchy Feely books and if you haven’t found these yet, then you need to. They are awesome and they have a whole variety of topics – pirates, penguins, puppy, kitty, lion, trains, dinosaurs, monsters, etc.

Lately, he’s really been into this one book from the library, Cars: rushing! honking! zooming! and I went out and got the other two like it, Trucks: Whizz! zoom! rumble! and Trains: steaming! pulling! huffing!, but he’s all about the cars.

He’s a huge fan of Boynton, but we’ve been going with the One, Two, Three and Oh My! Oh My! Oh Dinosaurs!.

You inspired me with this post, so I have a review of these novels up at LE – http://www.literaryescapism.com/2008/08/20/364/

Huh….I went to see if our library has your recommends, and they only had the first one. I had to place a hold for it, but that’s odd they didn’t have any of the others. We already have Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can you?

I went kind of nuts buying books for Ian too. He has a bunch of Dr. Seuss and both compilation of Curious George (I want the Clifford the Big Red Dog one next) and while they are still a little old for him (he’s not that gentle with pages), they are still sitting on his bookshelf. He’ll never surpass us though. Not until he starts buying his own books. :)
